一、課程說明(Course Description)

History of Portuguese Maritime Discoveries
葡萄牙海上發現史

Dr. Stephen Tseng-hsin Chang, 張增信

Portugal, a small Lusitanian (Lusitano or Luso) state of the Iberian Peninsula, perched on the south-west rim of the Euro-Asian continental plate, with an area of only 92,000 square kilometers and a population of less than 1.25 million at that time, was, however, a leading country in terms of maritime discoveries, and was the first European colonial power to reach Asia at the end of the fifteenth century. During the succeeding years, within a century, the influence of the Portuguese maritime empire had covered the whole Indian Oceanic basin, from the Cape of Good Hope to the Moluccas, and Nagasaki in Japan. This course will explore how this small Iberian state soon built up a phantom maritime empire in remote Asia, and all the political, economic, and cultural encounters between the West and the East. The historical material to be taught will broadly contain Portuguese colonial archives, Asian chronicles, and contemporary private accounts, besides the Jesuit archives, and the Portuguese Cartography during the “Age of Discoveries”.

本課程將介紹葡萄牙這個伊比利半島半島茸爾小邦是如何於十五至十六世紀成為發現新航路與新大陸的海上巨人,以及其間種應運而生的政治、經濟與文化的遭遇和衝突。
