課程目標
本課程專為博士生而開，旨在探討宗教研究的基本問題，一方面藉此提升學生的問題意識，另一方面則導引學生熟悉此一學域的最新趨勢。宗教研究的基本問題眾多，本課程挑選八個主題作為集中討論的重心：一、什麼是「宗教」？(What is religion? )；二、宗教的主題與比較 (Themes and comparison in religion)；三、「核心？」宗教經驗 (Religious experience)；四、圈內人 vs 圈外人 (Insider / Outsider)；五、基要主義 / 原教旨主義 (Fundamentalism)；六、世俗化 (Secularization)；七、融合現象 / 綜攝現象 (Syncretism)；八、什麼是「宗教研究」？(What is religious studies?)
本課程的目標在於訓練博士生的思辨能力，不論個別學生未來的專長走向，希望其能回應這些基本問題，並根據實際的研究案例，與西方為主的宗教學術界進行對話。

教學方式
本課程係屬「研討課程」(seminar)，因此老師與學生皆需課前準備，將閱讀所得帶至教室，進行雙向討論。每兩週涵蓋一主題，第一週主要討論閱讀資料，第二週除研討閱讀資料外，學生需就此一主題，根據事先準備的書寫作業做口頭報告。
教學助理工作項目
課程要求/評分標準
學生必須盡以下的責任：（一）課前閱讀所指定的教材，課中積極參與討論；（二）根據八大主題的閱讀資料，撰寫每篇長約兩頁的簡短報告，並於每一主題第二週上課時攜帶至課堂做報告並繳交；（三）撰寫有關本課程主題的報告一篇，長約十五頁，於學期末(1/14)繳交。詳細內容將於堂課上說明。
